Ethanol Blending in ATF News: Big news has come out regarding air travel in the country. The Government of India has given permission to mix ethanol in Aviation Turbine Fuel i.e. ATF. Notification has also been issued for this. Now apart from ethanol, other synthetic or man-made hydrocarbons can also be mixed in ATF.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has also updated the rules related to marketing of ATF through a gazette notification and brought its enforcement provisions in line with the amended criminal procedures. This decision has been taken after amendments made in the ‘Aviation Turbine Fuel (Regulation of Marketing) Order 2001’ issued under the Essential Commodities Act 1955.

However, the government has not yet set any immediate mandatory target for this rule. Also, no time limit has been fixed in this notification.

Why is ethanol blending important?

In fact, till now planes used to run only on conventional oil, but now mixing synthetic fuel in it will reduce the cost. Because the government’s target is to reduce its dependence on expensive crude oil coming from abroad. When crude oil is used less, the expenses of aviation companies will reduce and air fares will be cheaper.

The government’s target is also to reduce pollution. This step will take India towards the goal of ‘net zero’ emissions. When pollution reducing fuel is put into planes, the sky will also remain clear.

Now the fuel can be mixed with international standards like IS 17081. Right now the government has not set any mandatory target as to how much mixing is necessary, but by changing the rules it has made it clear that the future belongs to ‘clean energy’ only.

India saved foreign exchange worth more than ₹1.63 lakh crore

Not only this, India has saved foreign exchange worth more than ₹ 1.63 lakh crore through ethanol blending since 2014. Ethanol is mainly made from sugarcane molasses, corn and spoiled grains. With this, farmers get better prices for their crops and so far approximately ₹ 1.43 lakh crore has been paid to them.
