How Genetic Testing Helps In Cancer Treatment: A fifty year old woman from Bengaluru kept ignoring the small changes happening in her body for several months. Problems like early filling of stomach, feeling of swelling and constant fatigue gradually increased. When her condition worsened, tests revealed that she had ovarian cancer and the disease had spread throughout the body. The visible lumps were removed through surgery, but the real change came from a special test afterward.
According to Dr. Ashwin KR, head of the surgical oncology department of Aster Hospital, Bengaluru, the woman’s tumor was examined in depth. This investigation revealed that cancer cells were not able to repair the damaged genetic material of the body. This information proved to be most important in further treatment.

According to experts, cancer starts when changes occur in the genetic structure present within the cells of the body. But these changes are not the same in every patient. Some changes develop over time, while some may be inherited from the family. This is the reason why treatment for every cancer patient does not show the same effect. Dr. Ashwin KR explains that this type of genetic testing helps in understanding what is the main reason for increasing cancer. Many times, after receiving such information, the patient is given only that medicine which can have the greatest effect on his disease. This reduces wastage of both time and body on treatment.

What was seen in this case?
Same thing happened in the case of woman also. The investigation found such a signal which paved the way for doctors to give a special type of targeted medicine. This medicine affects those cancer cells which are unable to heal themselves. After the treatment started, the tumor started shrinking and now the woman is living a normal life, although she is being constantly monitored. Experts say that earlier in the treatment of cancer one generally had to depend on surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy only. But now with the help of genetic testing, treatment is being decided according to the patient’s body and disease. Due to this, treatment is becoming more accurate and effective.
Cancer cases are continuously increasing
According to the National Cancer Registration Program of the Indian Council of Medical Research, the number of cancer cases in the country is continuously increasing. It is estimated that the number of patients may increase rapidly in the coming years. In such a situation, experts believe that with timely diagnosis and proper treatment, genetic testing can become a new hope for patients.
