Maharashtra Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) President Sharad Pawar has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that even though our political thinking may be different from that of PM Narendra Modi, we should not forget that as Prime Minister, he is working to maintain India’s prestige at the international level. At an event organized here on Tuesday (May 19) evening, former Union Minister Sharad Pawar said that whenever there is an opportunity to work collectively in the national interest, everyone should come forward with a common objective and contribute in strengthening the reputation of the country.

Sharad Pawar also said that leaders like Indira Gandhi, PV Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh always kept the country’s future and its reputation at the center of their leadership. He said, ‘When it comes to saving India’s reputation, political differences should not come in the way and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working to maintain the country’s honor abroad.
He said, ‘Prime Minister Modi is working to protect the reputation of the country outside India. Our political ideologies may be different, but when it comes to the honor of the nation, political differences should not come in between.

Addressed the function of ‘Laxmanrao Gutte Rural Foundation’
Rajya Sabha member Pawar was addressing the felicitation and friendship function of former state and district officials organized by Pune-based ‘Laxmanrao Gutte Rural Development Foundation’. Pawar said that many people present at the program gave the most energetic years of their lives to Youth Congress and other organizations and now they are working in different political parties.
He said, ‘Today some people may be in different parties, but all of you remain among the common people and have consciously maintained your commitment towards the society.’ Recalling his early political journey, Pawar said that in 1958, when he was 18 years old, he came to Pune from Baramati because there was no college in his home town at that time.
Pawar remembered his meeting with Jawaharlal Nehru
Pawar told that he joined the youth movement, after four years became the head of Youth Congress in Pune city and later worked at the national level along with leading the Maharashtra Youth Congress. The senior leader said that one of the most memorable events of his youth was his meeting with Jawaharlal Nehru at Teen Murti House in Delhi.
He recalled, ‘We had prepared many questions on the issues of farmers and youth, but when Pandit Nehru came, due to his influential personality, we forgot everything that Haq wanted to say.’ Pawar also narrated an incident related to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, when she was on an official visit to the then Soviet Union and she felt that the Prime Minister of India was not given due respect.

Citing his conversation with former diplomat and Prime Minister IK Gujral, Pawar said Indira Gandhi had told Soviet officials that she represented 40 crore Indians and would not accept any disregard for their dignity.
Quoting the words of Indira Gandhi, Pawar said, ‘I represent 40 crore people of India. If his reputation is not respected, I will never accept it. ‘The NCP (SP) chief welcomed the coming together of old colleagues who had gone to different parties and urged them to continue such efforts. He said, ‘If there is an opportunity to work collectively in the national interest, then all of you should participate with a common objective and contribute to enhancing the prestige of the country.
