Melanoma Cases Increasing In UK: The cases of melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, are increasing rapidly in Britain. According to a new report of Cancer Research UK released recently, in the year 2022, melanoma was confirmed in more than 20 thousand people in the UK, which is the largest figure till date. The report warns that if this pace continues, around 26,500 people may become victims of this disease every year by 2040.
Men or women – who is being victimized the most?
According to research, the cases of melanoma in men are expected to increase by 23 percent and in women by 26 percent. Most concern has been expressed about the elderly. There has been a 57 percent increase in melanoma cases in people above 80 years of age in the last ten years. Experts say that the increasing population and the number of aging people is definitely a reason for this, but the real reason is excessive exposure to UV rays. According to the report, about 90 percent of melanoma cases in the UK are linked to exposure to strong sun rays and use of sunbeds. That means there are about 17 thousand cases which could have been prevented by taking proper precautions.

How big a role do ultraviolet rays play?
Meanwhile, a new study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer has also revealed shocking figures. According to research, more than 80 percent of the melanoma cases reported worldwide in 2022 were due to UV radiation. Of the 3.32 lakh cases reported worldwide, about 2.67 lakh were found to be directly linked to UV rays. According to doctors, melanoma develops in those skin cells that produce melanin. This melanin gives color to our skin. This cancer is considered more dangerous because it can spread rapidly to other parts of the body.
more melanoma in women
The report also revealed that more cases of melanoma are being found in women below 55 years of age than men. One reason for this is believed to be spending more time in the sun and the habit of tanning. At the same time, with increasing age, the risk increases in men due to prolonged exposure to sunlight. Experts have advised people to use broad-spectrum sunscreens with SRF 30 or more. However, doctors say that relying only on sunscreen is not enough. Wearing clothes that cover the entire body, staying in the shade during strong sunlight and staying away from sunbeds are more effective methods.
When should one be cautious?
According to experts, if a new mole appears on the skin, an old mole starts changing or a wound does not heal for a long time, then one should immediately contact a GP. He said that if the disease is caught in the early stages, the chances of success in treatment are around 95 percent.
