Five new judges will be sworn in in the Supreme Court on Tuesday (June 2, 2026). After getting the approval of the government on the recommendation of the collegium, the President has also approved the appointment of the five judges. These five judges to be appointed in the Supreme Court also include a woman senior advocate, who will be appointed to the Supreme Court directly from the bar.
Chief Justice Surya Kant will administer the oath of office to these judges at 10.30 am. With this, the number of judges in the Supreme Court will increase to 37, which will be the maximum till date. Senior Supreme Court lawyer Venkita Subramani Mohana, Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Shri Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court Sanjeev Sachdeva and Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Arun Palli have been elevated as judges of the Supreme Court.
Last month, the government had issued an ordinance amending a law to increase the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice. Due to already existing two vacancies, after increasing the sanctioned strength, a total of six posts became vacant in the Supreme Court. However, after the appointment of five judges today, only one post of judge will remain vacant in the Supreme Court.
After the appointment of senior lawyer Venkita Subramani Mohana in the Supreme Court, the number of women judges will increase to five. Presently in the Supreme Court, Justice B. V. Nagarathna is the only woman judge and was appointed in the year 2021. After 2021, a woman judge is going to be appointed to the Supreme Court.

Justice Nagarathna will retire in the year 2027 and before that she will also hold the post of CJI for more than a month, that is, she will retire from the Supreme Court from the post of CJI. V. Mohana’s age is currently 59 years and she will retire in the year 2031. She is the second woman judge to become a Supreme Court judge directly from the bar. Before him, Justice Indu Malhotra was the judge who was appointed to the Supreme Court directly from the bar. Talking about the present, there are two more judges in the Supreme Court, who were appointed directly to the Supreme Court from the bar, Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice K. V. Vishwanathan.
