An inspiring story has come to light from Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, which makes everyone understand the importance of struggle and hard work. Neelam Bhatia, who lost her husband at the age of 27, did not give up in difficult circumstances. She started tiffin service and taught both her daughters and today her younger daughter Meenakshi Bhatia has become Deputy Collector by securing fifth position in the PCS examination.
Life changed after husband’s death
Neelam Bhatia’s husband Ajay Kumar Bhatia, who lives in Pragati Vihar, Rishikesh, used to run a grocery shop in ISBT area. The life of the family was going on normally, but the sudden death of her husband due to heart attack shocked the entire family. At that time Neelam was only 27 years old and had two young daughters, whose age was one and a half years and six years.
Tiffin service became the support of the family
After the death of her husband, Neelam faced a big challenge of running the family. His financial condition was weak and he did not get the expected support from his family. In such a situation, instead of accepting defeat, he started tiffin service. She started delivering food to every home and office. By working hard from morning till late night, she took care of her family’s expenses and continued her daughters’ education.

Daughters closely watched their mother’s struggle
Neelam Bhatia’s daughters Shalini and Meenakshi saw their mother’s struggle since childhood. After school, both of them used to help their mother in delivering tiffin and used to study at night. Despite financial constraints, Neelam never compromised with her daughters’ education. She always taught her daughters that education is the strongest medium to change their lives.
Hard work paid off, both daughters became officers
Years of hard work, struggle and sacrifice finally paid off. Elder daughter Shalini Bhatia is today posted in Pauri on the post of Divisional Economics and Statistics Officer. Whereas younger daughter Meenakshi Bhatia has performed brilliantly in the PCS examination and secured fifth position and has been selected for the post of Deputy Collector.
