PNG Connection: Amidst the ongoing tension in the Middle East and increasing pressure on LPG supply, the Central Government is considering taking a big step towards promoting Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections. According to the report, the government is planning to launch a national centralized portal, where users will be able to directly apply for PNG.

As of now, users have to apply separately to the City Gas Distribution (CGD) company of their area. Through the proposed portal, people will be able to apply from a single platform. After this, the concerned gas company will have to dispose of the application within the stipulated time.

Plan to make gas pipeline map online

Along with this, the government is also considering making the gas grid maps available online to make the PNG network more transparent. With this, users will be able to get information whether PNG connection facility is available near their home or establishment or not. However, there are security concerns over making the detailed maps related to the pipeline public, so discussions are still going on.

According to sources, through this centralized portal the government will get near real-time monitoring of the functioning of CGD companies. This will enable us to know how fast the applications are being processed and whether the companies are following the prescribed timelines or not.

Plan to shift from LPG to PNG

The important thing is that this step of the government is part of the strategy to shift users from LPG to PNG. India imports about 60 percent of its total LPG requirement, of which about 90 percent comes from the Middle East.

New rules are already in effect

In March 2026, the government had issued an order that domestic users will not be able to have both LPG and PNG connections simultaneously. Where PNG is available, LPG users were instructed to shift to PNG within three months and if anyone does not do so, the LPG connection can be terminated.

Along with this, 8.8 lakh new users have registered for PNG connection. Till May 31, about 78 thousand users have surrendered LPG connections, because PNG facility started being available in their area.
