Suryakumar Yadav has been removed from the T20 captaincy of India. Shreyas Iyer has been given command in his place. The biggest reason behind Surya’s removal from captaincy was considered to be his poor form. Head coach Gautam Gambhir did not like the statement and removed Surya from the team along with his captaincy.

Gambhir did not like Surya’s statement
Surya had said some time ago that he wants to captain the Indian cricket team and win the gold medal in the Los Angeles Olympics to be held in 2028. Similarly, Surya also talked about the 2028 T20 World Cup. According to reports, Gambhir did not like this ‘loud statement’ of Surya at all. After this, Gambhir told Surya that his captaincy and place in the team would depend only on his recent performance.
Surya was struggling with poor batting form for a long time. Under his captaincy, the Men in Blue won the 2026 T20 World Cup title, but Surya’s personal performance with the bat was not anything special. Apart from this, Surya’s bat remained silent even in the recently concluded IPL 2026. He scored 270 runs in the season at an average of 20.77. This was Surya’s worst performance in the tournament since 2017.

Surya has played all three formats for India, but mainly he has played T20 International format. Surya played 1 Test, 37 ODI and 113 T20 International matches. He scored 08 runs in the only test. Scored 773 runs in 35 innings of ODI, which included 4 half-centuries. In the remaining 107 innings of T20 International, Surya scored 3272 runs at an average of 36.35 and strike rate of 162.94, which included 4 centuries and 25 half-centuries.
