The stir has once again intensified in the politics of Pakistan. The country’s former Finance Minister Miftah Ismail has claimed that this could prove to be the last year in office for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. His statement has come at a time when the Shehbaz Sharif government is presenting its recent diplomatic achievements as a major success. During a podcast, Ismail said that the real power in the country is not in the hands of the Prime Minister but in the hands of the military leadership.
Miftah Ismail referred to a social media post of Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi in support of his claim. He said that Naqvi congratulated Field Marshal General Asim Munir after an important agreement related to Iran, but did not even mention Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. According to Ismail, this shows that even within the government, the perception is getting stronger that someone else is at the center of power and Shahbaz’s position is weakening.

Question on economic front
The former Finance Minister also raised serious questions on the performance of the Shahbaz government. He says that the last four years have been very difficult economically for Pakistan. The country could not achieve satisfactory growth rates, while poverty continued to increase. He claimed that unemployment has reached its highest level in many years and the economic problems of the common people have increased instead of decreasing.
Army’s influence on decisions
Ismail said that at present the influence of military leadership on important policy and strategic decisions is clearly visible in Pakistan. According to him, the Prime Minister does take some administrative and day-to-day decisions, but his role on big and decisive issues has been limited. He alleged that the army’s hold on the country’s ruling system seems stronger than ever.
popularity becomes a challenge
Miftah Ismail believes that Shehbaz Sharif’s biggest weakness is his decreasing political acceptance. He said that public support is considered the biggest strength in democratic politics, but at present the Prime Minister is not able to add any big support base for the government or the system. According to Ismail, if popularity continues to remain weak then it becomes difficult for the ruling establishment to promote any leader for a long time.
