IPS Shobha Ohatkar: IPS Shobha Ohtkar, who was among the selected officers of Bihar Police, retired on Tuesday, June 30 after a long administrative career. She retired from the post of Director General cum Commander of Home Defense Corps and Fire Service, Shobha Ohatkar was given farewell in a ceremony organized at the Central Training Institute located in Bihta.

During more than three decades of police service, Shobha Ohatkar handled law and order in many districts of Bihar and later played a role in many major works related to the modernization of fire service and home guards. Due to her strict administrative attitude, she remained in the news for a long time. Shobha Ohatkar is a 1990 batch Indian Police Service officer. He was born in Pune, Maharashtra. After completing his initial studies from here, he did MA in Political Science from Hyderabad. After this, he passed the UPSC examination and made a place in the Indian Police Service. His father Balram Ohatkar has held the post of Excise Commissioner in Hyderabad. Shobha Ohatkar has been giving credit for her success to her father on many occasions. He has a son and a daughter in his family.

Shobha Ohtkar became IPS at the age of 22

After becoming an IPS at the age of just 22, Shobha Ohatkar’s first appointment was as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Patna City in 1992. At that time the crime situation in Bihar was considered quite challenging. After this he took charge as Superintendent of Police in many important districts. During her career, she was the SP of 6 districts including Patna, Darbhanga, Hazaribagh, Chhapra, Vaishali and Deoghar. Before the division of Bihar in 2000, all these postings took place during United Bihar. Later she went to Maharashtra on central deputation and after returning to Bihar in 2020, she was given DG level responsibility.

Took command of law and order in many districts

During the tenure of Shobha Ohatkar, the postings of Hazaribagh, Deoghar and Vaishali have been the most discussed. In Hazaribagh, he launched a large-scale campaign against coal smuggling, in which a large quantity of illegal coal was seized and action was taken against many smugglers. While being SP in Vaishali district, he took action against many criminal gangs operating in Raghopur Diara area. His tenure was also in discussion regarding investigation of serious cases like kidnapping and crime control in Darbhanga.

Shobha Ohatkar is known for her strict working style. During his posting in Deoghar, he took strict action against crimes and indecent behavior against women. He also took many steps regarding the safety of women in Baidyanath Dham temple area. After this his image became stronger as a strict police officer. He believed that any IPS officer should have experience in departments like CID and Special Branch along with field posting, so that the challenges of law and order can be understood better.
