China’s reaction to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s visit to India remains a topic of discussion. China’s official newspaper Global Times has published many articles on this visit and India-Japan relations. In these articles, an attempt has been made to raise questions on the relationship between India and Japan. In particular, the issue of not using local tap water has been raised prominently by the Japanese delegation.
Global Times wrote in one of its articles that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warmly welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and described him as an elder brother. On the other hand, the Japanese delegation did not use tap water in India and used only bottled water. The newspaper described this as an example of Japan’s double behavior towards India.

Uproar over use of mineral water
According to the Chinese newspaper, the Japanese delegation used only bottled mineral water for drinking during their visit to India. Not only this, tap water was also not used for gargling and cleaning the mouth. The report claimed that a large quantity of bottled water had already been sent to India by government aircraft, so that the same could be used throughout the tour. Global Times, citing a Japanese media report, said that the Japanese government had already given strict instructions to its delegation regarding cleanliness and health. According to the report, tap water was not to be used in any way and only packaged mineral water was to be used for every need.
What did the Chinese newspaper claim?
The Chinese newspaper claimed that some experts see this behavior as Japan’s superficial attitude and lack of respect towards India. However, there has been no official response from India or Japan on this claim. According to the report, China’s concern is not limited to the water issue only. In recent times, defence, technology and strategic cooperation between India and Japan has increased rapidly. Making changes to its old military policy, Japan has for the first time approved joint development of military equipment with India.
Agreement regarding navy between India and Japan
An agreement has also been signed between India and Japan regarding the naval communication system UNICORN. Besides, both the countries have also decided to increase cooperation on the supply chain of important minerals. Currently, China is considered to have great influence in this area. The report also said that Japan has already made it clear that if China attacks Taiwan in the future, it will support Taiwan. Apart from this, Japan has also deployed long range missiles in its areas near China. After these incidents, tension between China and Japan has continuously increased.
What is China worried about?
Both India and Japan are neighboring countries of China. In such a situation, China is worried that the growing partnership between the two countries could become a strategic challenge for it in the future. Recently, India and Japan, in their joint statement, had also expressed concern over the situation in the South China Sea and East China Sea. Both countries opposed any country’s use of force to change the existing situation and increase military activities. However, no country was named in this statement. Meanwhile, China’s Foreign Ministry also responded by saying that no specific group or faction should be formed to target any third country.
Attempt to raise questions on India-Japan relations
China is also worried that Japan’s advanced technology and India’s strong production capacity could together challenge its dominance in many fields. For this reason, Global Times prominently raised the tap water controversy that came up during its visit to India and tried to raise questions on India-Japan relations.
