The last journey of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei started from Imam Hussein Square in Tehran on Monday (6 July 2026) morning. The journey was started by playing the national anthem of Iran. Thousands of people started gathering on the streets since morning. Delegations from all over the world reached Iran to attend Khamenei’s last journey. However, Muslim countries were seen divided over whether to participate in his last salute.

These Muslim countries did not attend Khamenei’s last visit

From Pakistan’s PM Shahbaz Sharif to most of its ministers and Army Chief Asim Munir were present at the funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Khamenei. China had sent its special envoy and Russia had sent a senior representative. The Vice President of Turkey himself reached Tehran for this program. Three Muslim countries, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Kuwait did not send their representatives to Khamenei’s last journey, after which different speculations have started again regarding world politics. These three countries are also important pillars in the politics and economy of the Gulf region.

Countries around the world sent their representatives

Foreign guests included heads of state, parliament speakers and ministers of many countries. These included Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Georgian President Mikhail Kavelashvili, Iraqi President Nizar Amedee, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, President of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani, as well as senior officials from China and Russia. Represented India at the funeral of Bihar Governor Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for the country Holy Margherita Khamenei.

Religious figures, scholars and tribal leaders also attended the function. The funeral rituals will continue until July 9, with processions taking place in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad, as well as ceremonies in Iraq. Iranian authorities have announced public closures and restrictions on airspace on specific dates in Tehran and Mashhad, and Thursday was declared a day of national mourning.
