Amidst the ongoing heated argument between US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, Italy has responded to Trump’s new attack. On Monday, Trump shared a picture of Meloni and himself on his Truth social account, in which it was written that Restraining order is needed.
Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto reacted sharply to Trump’s post. While talking to Sky TG24 news channel, he said that people keep coming and going, but relationships should remain. According to the report of news agency AFP, Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also reacted to this post and said that he believes that transatlantic relations are more important than personal comments. However, Meloni has not responded directly to this post.
Despite both leaders being associated with right-wing politics, the tension started when Trump claimed at the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France that Meloni had requested Trump to take a photo with him. According to a transcript provided by Italian TV channel La7, after the summit, President Trump claimed that Meloni was very desperate to get a photo taken with him and that she finally agreed because she felt pity.
What were Trump’s claims?
Trump did not stop there but he further said that by talking to his Italian counterpart at the summit, he was actually doing her a favor. According to the Italian channel, Trump said that perhaps he is happy that I talked to him. I had no need to talk to him. On these claims of Trump, Meloni said that she was really surprised by his comments.
On these claims of Trump, Meloni had said that all I can say is that it is a matter of regret. They do not show the same firmness towards the enemies of the West and America, while on the other hand they adopt a very soft attitude towards those leaders. One thing they should remember is that Italy and I never beg.
