Vermicompost Tips: As soon as the rainy season arrives, there is relief from the heat on one hand. At the same time, the tension of farmers doing business of vermicompost increases a lot. Monsoon months are the most important time for earthworms. If there is even a little carelessness during this period. Then your entire unit may be ruined.
Earthworms are very sensitive. Which need a right environment to survive and function properly. The humidity in the air increases a lot during rainy days. And if the bed gets filled with water then the earthworms start suffocating. Therefore, extra care is needed in this season so that both your hard work and costs are safe.
How to protect yourself from waterlogging
The biggest problem during rainy days is accumulation of water in vermicompost beds. If your beds are in the open. So immediately make arrangements to cover them with tarpaulin or strong plastic sheet. Keep in mind that there should be a drainage system around the bed. So that rain water does not stagnate there.
There should be this much moisture
In this season, the moisture level in the earthworm bed should be between 60 to 70 percent only. If there is too much water. So the earthworms will start dying due to lack of oxygen or will run away leaving the bed. Therefore, keep checking the bed from time to time and make arrangements to drain out the extra water immediately.

keep proper ventilation
In order to save water, many farmers pack the beds completely airtight with plastic. Which is the biggest mistake. Earthworms need air to breathe. Therefore, place a shade or tarpaulin over the bed in such a way that air ventilation is maintained.
It is important to maintain the temperature of the bed
Along with this, also pay attention to the quality of cow dung during the rainy season. Avoid putting wet and rotten cow dung in the bed. Because due to this the temperature of the bed suddenly increases. And due to heat and humidity, earthworms suffer and die. If you take care of these small but important things. So even during the monsoon season, your vermicompost business will continue to give huge profits without any loss.
