The famous government house at 6-Flagstaff Road, Civil Lines, Delhi will soon be seen performing a new responsibility. This complex, which was once in the news as the official residence of the Chief Minister, is now going to become a major center for hosting government guests and cultural activities. The Delhi government has taken a formal decision to develop it as a state guest house and a modern cultural centre.

In a recent meeting held at the government level, it was decided that the use of this complex will not be limited to administrative needs only. In future, along with government meetings, welcoming of national and international delegations, accommodation of distinguished guests and various cultural programs will be organized here. The government believes that this will fill an important gap that has been felt in the capital for a long time.

Delhi will get its own state guest house for the first time

Till now the Delhi government did not have any dedicated state guest house where government representatives coming from different states or foreign countries could be accommodated. Every time one had to depend on different arrangements. After the new decision, a permanent and state-of-the-art facility will be available, through which government events can be conducted in a more organized manner.

There will be many modern facilities in one campus

Under the plan, modern guest rooms, conference halls, meeting rooms and multipurpose auditorium will be prepared in the campus. Art exhibitions, music and dance programs, literary events, cultural dialogues, government functions and programs of various departments can be organized here regularly. The government aims to link this complex with administrative use as well as the cultural identity of the capital.

The original form of the historical building will be preserved

According to officials, the development work will be done in such a way that there is no need for large-scale demolition of the existing building. Efforts will be made to add modern facilities while preserving the original structure of this complex of historical importance as much as possible.

Bungalow was in headlines due to political controversies, got the name of ‘Sheeshmahal’

This is the same government house which has remained the center of political debate in the last few years regarding the expenditure on reconstruction and beautification. The Bharatiya Janata Party named it ‘Sheeshmahal’ during the election campaign and raised it as a major issue in the assembly election campaign. Because of this, this bungalow remained in public and political discussion for a long time.

It was constructed during the British period and was the residence of many leaders.

This huge government building was constructed about eight decades ago in the year 1942 during the British rule. In later years it remained in use as the residence of many senior public representatives. From 2004 to 2008, the then Assembly Speaker Prem Singh lived here, while later it was allotted to the Assembly Deputy Speaker Amrish Gautam. From the year 2015, it became the official residence of the then Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Controversy increased after CAG report, action taken against engineers also

Procedural questions were raised in various investigations, including the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), on the expenditure related to the reconstruction and beautification of this complex. Due to alleged construction irregularities related to the case, action was also taken against eight senior engineers of the Public Works Department. It is said that this action also affected his service record, promotions and future administrative responsibilities.
