After the crushing defeat of 125 runs in the third T20 against England and fourth consecutive T20 defeat, Indian team’s head coach Gautam Gambhir for the first time openly expressed his views on the poor performance of the team. He said that the team is currently going through a ‘reset’ phase and it is important to give time to the young players to prove themselves. After losing four consecutive T20 matches, Gautam Gambhir admitted that the team’s problem is not just poor form or lack of experience. After the big defeat against England, he told on which front the Indian team is lagging the most. According to Gambhir, the biggest weakness of the team is ‘game awareness’. He believes that from the Ireland tour to the England series, the Indian players were not able to understand the match conditions properly and had to suffer the consequences in the form of consecutive defeats.
‘The team is in a period of change, don’t judge only by results’
Gautam Gambhir said that it would not be right to compare the current Indian team with the team that won the T20 World Cup. He said that now the captain of the team has changed. The opening pair is new and experienced players like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah are also not part of this team. He said, “When a team is reset, it has to be given time. 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi is opening. Prince Yadav is playing his second T20 and Harshit Rana has returned after injury. In such a situation, the whole picture cannot be seen on the basis of results alone.”
Where is the biggest mistake happening?
Gambhir said that the problem is more visible in the thinking and decisions of the players than in the technique. According to him, the Indian team is continuously failing to read the situations correctly during the match. He said that the batsmen and bowlers have to understand how the pitch is playing. What is the direction of the wind? Which part of the field is bigger and at what time should the risk be taken? In T20 cricket, these small things change the outcome of the match. He said, ‘Since the Ireland tour, we have not been successful in adapting ourselves to the circumstances. If we had understood the situation better, we would not have lost four consecutive matches.
Didn’t lose faith even after being all out for 76 runs
In the third T20, the Indian team was reduced to just 76 runs. Which was its biggest defeat in terms of runs in T20 international cricket. Despite this, Gautam Gambhir refused to accept this as a permanent weakness of the team. He said that earlier in both the matches, Indian batsmen had scored around 190 runs. The team is playing aggressive and high-risk cricket. That’s why sometimes such bad days are also seen. Gambhir believes that to prepare a strong team of the future, young players will have to be given consistent opportunities against big teams only. According to him, players will develop only by playing against a strong team like England. Even if one has to face some defeats during this period.
What did Gambhir say in praise of Prince Yadav?
However, the batting was a complete failure. But fast bowler Prince Yadav impressed in his second T20 match. He took two wickets and played responsibility in the death overs along with the powerplay. Gambhir said that a player should not be evaluated only by statistics. He said that it is also important to see how Prince Yadav bowled in difficult times. According to him, the future of the young fast bowler is very bright.

now the next challenge
India is trailing 0-2 in the five-match T20 series. In such a situation, Team India will not have the challenge of just making a comeback in the next match. Rather, it will also have to be proved that Gautam Gambhir’s ‘Reset Plan’ can take the future as well as the current team to the path of victory.
