Can Intermittent Fasting Increase Heart Disease Risk: Nowadays, fasting is not limited to just religious tradition, but has also become increasingly popular in the world of fitness. From methods like 16:8 to eating once a day, people are finding it’s an easy way to eat less, lose weight faster, and feel better. In the initial phase, many people saw its benefits, like losing weight, keeping sugar under control and reducing cholesterol. But now new research is raising some serious questions regarding this trend.

What came out in the research?

Recently, an analysis conducted on more than 20 thousand people found that those who ate food only for 8 hours or less a day, had a higher risk of death from heart-related diseases. In some cases this risk was found to be as high as 91 percent. This does not mean that fasting is harmful for everyone, but it certainly challenges the notion that eating in less time is always better.

What do experts say?

Dr Divya Ranjan Behera told TOI that fasting for a long time causes many sudden changes in the body. Blood sugar levels fluctuate rapidly, stress-related hormones increase and fat levels are also affected. All these changes can put pressure on the heart. According to Dr. Ditesh M, not eating for a long time causes fluctuations in sugar, minerals and hormones, due to which the heartbeat can become irregular.

lack of water

Another big reason is lack of water, when people do not eat for a long time, they often drink less water. Due to this, essential minerals like potassium and magnesium can decrease in the body, which are necessary for normal heartbeat. Dr. Sunil Roy TN explains that due to lack of these minerals and lack of water, the heart has to work harder to maintain normal rhythm.

Who should be careful?

Fasting is not equally safe for every person. People who already have diabetes, high BP or heart related problems should take special care, apart from this, this method can also be risky for those who take certain medicines. Even a healthy person cannot ignore the signs of the body. Symptoms like frequent fatigue, dizziness, discomfort in the chest or rapid heartbeat are signs that the pressure on the body is increasing.

Being too strict can increase both physical and mental fatigue. Effects like low energy, irritability and reduced ability to work start appearing gradually. Therefore balance is most important. There is nothing wrong with fasting in itself, but when it is done excessively or without planning, it can become problematic. The right way is to maintain a balanced diet and consult a doctor before making any major changes.
