Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made a big announcement saying that she and other exiled Awami League leaders are planning to voluntarily return to Bangladesh around December this year. She said that she knows that she may be arrested or even killed as soon as she returns, but despite this she will go back to her country and surrender before the court.

78-year-old Sheikh Hasina told news agency Reuters that she was fully aware of the risks of her return. He said, ‘They can arrest me as soon as I return, they can even kill me. Still I have to go back. Hasina said that the leaders and workers of her party Awami League are being continuously repressed. He said emotionally that even if he dies, it should be on the soil of his own country, where his parents are buried and where his blood was shed.
Sheikh Hasina is living in India
Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh and came to India after being ousted from power following the student movement in August 2024. She has been living in exile since her government fell following widespread student-led protests. He also clarified that there has been no discussion of any kind with the current government or officials of Dhaka regarding his return to Bangladesh.
Sentenced to death for crime against humanity
This statement of Sheikh Hasina has come at a time when, just a few months ago, the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh had convicted her of crimes against humanity and sentenced her to death. The court had admitted that Sheikh Hasina had a role in the crackdown on protesters during the 2024 student movement. The verdict said she either ordered the killing of protesters or failed to stop them.
Action also taken against former home minister and former police chief
In the same case, the court has also sentenced former Home Minister of Bangladesh Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death. At the same time, former Inspector General of Police Chaudhry Abdullah Al-Mamun has been sentenced to five years in jail. The court has also ordered to confiscate the properties of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
