This fall in oil prices came amid positive news regarding the ceasefire and peace agreement between America and Iran despite tensions, which raised hopes of resuming energy shipping from the Strait of Hormuz. America, meanwhile, refrained from targeting Iran’s main energy infrastructure. He also said that “this conflict will not turn into a long war.” His saying this has reduced the fear of investors to some extent.
Will the prices of petrol and diesel reduce now?
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had indicated last week that at present there is no consideration of reducing fuel prices domestically. This decision has been taken when OPEC+ has announced to increase oil production by 1,88,000 barrels per day from August 2026. This is the 50th consecutive month when countries included in OPEC+ have increased their production limits. Let us tell you that since the tension between America and Iran started in the last week of February, fuel prices in the country have increased four times in the last four months, due to which the prices have increased by about Rs 7.5-8 per liter during this period.

Why are rates different in different cities?
The central government imposes uniform excise duty across the country, but state governments impose VAT or sales tax on petrol and diesel in different percentages. For example, oil is cheap in Andaman and Nicobar due to very low taxes. At the same time, in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, oil becomes expensive due to high taxes. Transportation costs and the current supply-demand situation also impact the retail price that customers see at the petrol pump.
