Chennai Super Kings and head coach Stephen Fleming have decided to part ways after 18 years of togetherness. The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise issued an official statement on Monday giving this information. Both the parties decided to end this partnership with mutual consent. Chennai Super Kings last won the IPL title in 2023. After which the team could not qualify for the playoffs in the 2024, 2025 and 2026 seasons. Due to continuous poor performance, questions were being raised about the future of Stephen Fleming for some time. Now the franchise has decided to part ways with the former New Zealand captain.

Chennai Super Kings said in its official statement, ‘Super Kings and Stephen Fleming have decided to part ways by mutual consent, bringing to an end one of the most successful and longest-running partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League.’

The franchise further said, ‘This decision was taken with mutual respect and gratitude after many open and honest discussions between Fleming and the Super Kings management.’

Stephen Fleming joined Chennai Super Kings as a player in the first season of IPL (2008). After this, in 2009 he took over the responsibility of the head coach of the team. Under his leadership in the next 17 years, CSK made its mark among the most successful and most respected teams of franchise cricket. During Fleming’s tenure, Chennai Super Kings won 5 IPL titles and 2 Champions League T20 trophies. The team made it to the playoffs 12 times, while also playing the finals in IPL 10 times.
After the announcement of Fleming’s separation, CSK owner Rupa Gurunath praised his contribution. He said, ‘Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. For nearly two decades, he played a key role in shaping our identity, our vision and culture of excellence.
He further said, ‘On behalf of the Super Kings franchise, we express our heartfelt gratitude for his dedication, passion and leadership. Even though our togetherness on the field is coming to an end now, he will always remain an integral part of our legacy.
KS Vishwanathan, managing director of the franchise, said, ‘From the beginning of this journey, Fleming not only decided our playing style, but also decided what our identity would be as a franchise. He developed a culture of consistency, humility and always putting the team first. His ability to understand the players and get the best performance from everyone was his biggest strength. He further said, ‘His influence was not limited to just the field. We are proud that we got the opportunity to be a part of such a wonderful journey with him.
While bidding farewell to the franchise, Fleming said, ‘Eighteen years in the world of sports is a lifetime and I am leaving here with only gratitude. The time spent with Chennai Super Kings has been the biggest privilege of my coaching career. Together we achieved many memorable victories, faced difficult times and created memories that will stay with me forever. Cieske will always be close to my heart and I will continue to support this team in the years to come.
