Will India send Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh or not? Foreign Ministry’s strict reply- ‘We have already…’

Amid former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s plan to return to Dhaka, India on Tuesday (July 14) gave a measured response, saying there has been no change in its stand on the issue. Hasina (78) had left Dhaka for India amid the fall of her government following the massive anti-government movement in August 2024 and has been living in India since then.

According to PTI report, last week sources close to Hasina had said that the former Prime Minister is preparing to return to Dhaka voluntarily with the aim of reactivating her Awami League party. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, ‘There has been no change in our stand on this matter. Any matter related to extradition is a legal matter and will be dealt with accordingly.

2024 Bangladesh court gave death sentence to Hasina

In November last year, a special court in Dhaka had sentenced Sheikh Hasina to death on charges of ‘crimes against humanity’ over the government’s alleged brutal crackdown on student-led protests in 2024.

Since the verdict, Bangladesh has been continuously demanding Sheikh Hasina’s extradition from India to face legal action. Meanwhile, Awami League’s publicity sub-committee member Qazi Naseem Rupak said on Friday, ‘We are all ready to welcome our leader.’

Let us tell you that Bangladesh has welcomed the plan of Sheikh Hasina’s return. Dhaka has said that Sheikh Hasina will have to go through the judicial process to prove her innocence. Prime Minister Tariq Rehman’s advisor Zahidur Rehman has asked Hasina to bring the world’s best lawyer with her.
