ICC Format Change For World Cup 2027: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made a major change regarding the format of the 2027 ODI World Cup (ODI World Cup 2027) to be played next year. Issuing a release, the ICC said that these changes were approved at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Edinburgh.
14 teams will participate in the upcoming World Cup. A ‘Super Series’ will be organized for the last 3 teams. Apart from this, there will be a total of three rounds to reach the finals. So let us understand in detail what are all the changes regarding the ODI World Cup.
2027 ODI World Cup will be held in three countries, 14 teams will participate
ICC said that the upcoming World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. To reach the finals, teams will have to go through 3 rounds.
Round-1, Super Series
Out of the 14 qualifying teams, the bottom three teams will play a round-robin ‘Super Series’. The winning team of this series will make it to the next round.
Round-2 (30 matches)
The remaining 12 teams will be divided into 2 groups of 6 each. Matches will be held in round-robin format in each group. The top three teams of each group and the next best ranked team from both the groups will advance to the Super 7 stage.
Round-3, Super-7 Stage (21 matches)
In this stage, 7 teams will play in round-robin format, in which the top 4 teams will qualify for the semi-finals. There will be a semi-final between the first and fourth teams. The second semi-final will be played between the second and third placed teams.
Format also changed for 2028 T20 World Cup
The upcoming 2028 T20 World Cup will be continued with 20 teams, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. The changed format of the tournament has been designed in such a way that the number of teams can be increased in the second stage of the competition.
Group Stage (30 matches)
Will be divided into 5 groups of 20 teams. In the last T20 World Cup of 2026, 20 teams were divided into 4 groups. The top-2 teams of the five groups will qualify for Super-10.
Super-10 (20 matches)
In the Super-10 group stage, the teams will be divided into two groups of 5 each, in which matches will be played in round-robin format. The winning teams of each Super 10 group will directly qualify for the semi-finals.
Eliminator (2 matches)
The remaining two places for the semi-finals will be decided through a new ‘Eliminator Round’, in which the second-placed teams of each Super 10 group will face the third-placed teams of the other group.
The teams winning the eliminator matches will complete the semi-final line-up, while the semi-finals and final will be played as per the existing format.
