Last month, on June 7, elections were held in Pakistan’s illegally occupied Gilgit Baltistan province, where Bilawal Bhutto’s Pakistan Peoples Party was elected amid allegations of rigging and Amjad Hussain was made the Chief Minister of Shia-dominated occupied Baltistan. Along with this, due to a single party not having absolute majority, a power sharing agreement was signed by Pakistan Army between Shehbaz Sharif’s party Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and PPP, under which the Chief Minister and Speaker will be from PPP. Whereas the Governor and Deputy Speaker will be from PML(N).
Now, taking this trend forward, Pakistan has started the illegal process of making Gilgit Baltistan, which has been under its occupation for 78 years, as the fifth province, under which yesterday on Thursday, the assembly of Gilgit Baltistan under its occupation got an unopposed joint resolution passed to make Gilgit Baltistan the fifth province of Pakistan and on the copy of the joint resolution, the Chief Minister of the pro-Pakistan party PPP, the Speaker as well as the leaders of PML (N), opposition and Signatures of the Deputy Speaker and 2 independent MLAs have also been sent to Pakistan so that the Pakistani Parliament can implement this illegal process by amending the Constitution and declare Gilgit Baltistan as the fifth province and take over it illegally.
In fact, in the year 2019, when India had removed 370 and 35A from Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan had threatened that it would also end the system of semi-autonomy in Gilgit Baltistan and in this context, the process of making Gilgit Baltistan the fifth province was started. However, the then government of Imran Khan had used it as a threat only to put pressure on India and at that time, because there was a PTI government in Gilgit Baltistan, the local government had opposed making Gilgit Baltistan a province of Pakistan.
However, now when the partnership government of Bilwal Bhutto and Shahbaz Sharif has been formed in Gilgit Baltistan, as in the center of Pakistan, both the parties are jointly running the government, then yesterday in the Assembly, a resolution was passed in the assembly to make Gilgit Baltistan the fifth province, in which not only has it been talked about illegally declaring Gilgit Baltistan province as the fifth province of Pakistan, but also a demand has been made to give seats of Pakistani Parliament and Senate in Gilgit Baltistan.
Gilgit Baltistan was not given statehood due to dispute
According to the system implemented in Pakistan till now, according to the Constitution of Pakistan, there are only 4 provinces Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where the laws of Pakistan are fully implemented and members from these states are elected in the Parliament and Senate of Pakistan. Also, these provinces have their own assemblies, but due to the dispute over Pakistan’s occupation of Gilgit Baltistan, it was not given the status of a province. Along with this, there was a semi-autonomous system in which the laws of Pakistan were implemented in Gilgit Baltistan, but the Chief Minister and Governor of Gilgit Baltistan had so much power that they did not have to depend on Pakistan.
Gilgit Baltistan is an occupied area of Pakistan, hence Pakistan never declared it a province, but now Pakistan has started preparations to make it the fifth province by forming a pro-Pakistan government in Gilgit Baltistan, the first stage of which has been completed by passing the resolution from the Assembly.
