US President Donald Trump said on Monday (27 July 2026) that talks are underway between Washington and Tehran and there is a good chance of reaching an agreement, but he warned that if the talks fail, US military attacks on Iran will resume.

“We’re having a good conversation,” Trump told reporters. “I think there’s a chance something good will happen, and if it doesn’t, we’ll do what we were doing two days ago.” After this, in an election rally in Michigan, Trump said that Iran cannot be persuaded by bribing and warned that if diplomacy is not successful, America will defeat them badly.

These statements have come at a time when there were reports of drone attacks in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Iraq on Monday. America on Saturday stopped the two-week long bombing campaign against Iran. According to a US official and multiple US media reports, military commanders advised Trump that all that could be achieved by the strikes had been done.

Ammunition shortage issue
A US official told Reuters that General Dan Kane, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had also expressed concern about the shortage of ammunition used in air strikes. Trump rejected the claims that the US Army is facing shortage of ammunition. He said the stock was being replenished rapidly and he wanted more advanced weapon systems.

Tehran refuses to try to negotiate
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai said that Tehran has not abandoned the path of diplomacy and talks are still going on through mediators. However, he rejected reports that Iran had appealed for talks. “It’s not in our DNA,” Baghai said. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Iran will not attack as long as Trump’s self-imposed ceasefire continues.
