Patel said that this long delay has broken India’s confidence and has also affected cooperation between the two countries.
Priti Patel told that India refused to take back illegal immigrants because Britain did not extradite Nirav Modi. Preeti Patel had signed the extradition order of Nirav Modi in April 2021. The British court had also accepted that there was enough preliminary evidence against Nirav Modi. Preeti Patel said that it is very surprising and sad that Nirav Modi is still in Britain.
Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Preeti Patel said that the Indian government was very angry due to not being able to extradite this businessman, who was wanted in the Punjab National Bank fraud and money laundering case of Rs 13,500 crore. Patel said, ‘If our system had worked properly and taken the right steps instead of getting entangled in excuses, he would not have been in this country.’ He said that due to this delay India’s relations with us are also being seriously affected.
‘Nirav Modi should have been in an Indian jail’
Preeti Patel said that after the completion of the legal process, Nirav Modi should have started serving his sentence in India by now. He said, ‘After going through the legal process, he should have been in an Indian jail and served his sentence there. This is the purpose of UK extradition laws and treaties.
Let us tell you that 55 year old diamond trader Nirav Modi has been kept in Pentonville Jail in London. He is wanted in three criminal cases in India. These include cases related to PNB fraud case, money laundering investigation and alleged tampering with evidence and witnesses.

He said that during his tenure as Home Minister between 2019 to 2022, diplomatic challenges also emerged as India refused to take back illegal immigrants. All this happened due to non-extradition of Nirav Modi. Patel said, ‘It was a huge challenge to convince India to take back those people whose asylum applications were rejected. I am sure this happened because we had a high-profile case of Nirav Modi.
