Ukraine operation spider web: Ukraine on Sunday (1 June 2025) destroyed the 40 bombers plane, targeting Russia’s military airports under Operation Spiderweb. Ukraine carried out this operation after 18 months of planning. Ukraine used a low -cost 150 small FPV drones, out of which 118 drones have made the biggest attack on Russia so far.
Russian air defense system dodged
Taking responsibility for this operation, Ukraine Security Service (SBU) said that they secretly transported the drone within the Russia border. These drones were launched with wooden structures on trucks to attack from short distance during the day. The drones were launched from mobile trucks near Russia’s strategic airports, which made it easier to dodge the Russian air defense system. Ukrainian President Volodimir Jailonsky described this operation as a great achievement.
Ukraine changed the definition of war
Operation Spider web is especially important because it has challenged the traditional air power. Instead of deploying fighter jets or cruise missiles, Ukraine rely on cheap drones equipped with explosives, which proved to be effective. The cost of a FPV drone was 430 to 600 dollars (about 36,000 to 50,000 rupees). With these cheap drones, Ukraine destroyed 40 aircraft (TU-95, TU-22M3, A-50) at four airports in Russia.
Countries with large industrial capacity and high technology have been dominated by the airforce strength for decades. This operation indicates how the enemies can be maximum damaged at a low cost even without traditional aerial strength. Traditional aerial operation requires months -long planning, best fighter jet, fuel tanker satellite coordination. Operation Spider Web was weak in all these cases, but still Ukraine has written a new history in the field of war.
Lesson for india
The drone is now becoming increasingly the main power worldwide. Spider web attack is evidence that UAV or unmanned air force is the cornerstone of future wars. With this, the army can go very inside in the enemy’s area. This will not even risk the life of the pilot.
India will have to move rapidly towards unmanned systems. India has spent a lot in its fighter aircraft, helicopters and air transport for decades, but now there will be a drone using unmanned and AI in future. India has taken initial steps in that direction, but not so fast. With Ukrainian operation, India should proceed on indigenous drones, armed UAVs.
