Rare earth elements: India has taken a big decision to reduce dependence on China and meet the domestic needs on Rare Earth Elements (REES). India has asked the government mining company Indian Rare Earth Limited (IREL) to stop the 13 -year -old rare mineral export agreement with Japan.
According to sources, recently, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met with the representatives of auto and other industries and asked IREL to stop the export of Neodium to Japan. It is usually used to make magnets in the motor of electric vehicles.
An agreement was reached in both countries in 2012
In 2012, the agreement was reached between IREL and Toyota Susho’s company Toyotsu Rare Economic India. Under this, IREL used to export rare meaning elements to Japan, which was sent to Japan by processing Toyotsu Economics. In the year 2024, Toyotsu processed more than 1,000 metric tonnes sent from India and sent it to Japan. It was about one third of the total production of IREL.
China dominates the world over rees
In fact, China is starting to use rees as weapons these days as about 69 percent rare meaning elements are produced here as compared to the whole world and 90 percent refining also controls China. That is, even though the mineral may be removed, but for its refining, it will have to resort to China because China has advanced technology for refining. Countries like India and America also have this technology in limited form.
Huge reserves of rees in India too
Although there is no shortage of rees in India too, but despite this, India has to depend on China for its needs for lack of refining. Alam is that despite being a huge reserves of rare meanings elements with itself, India gets the battery, magnets, etc. from China, but now India wants to become self -sufficient in this direction, reducing its dependence on China.
In this connection, the government held a meeting on Tuesday, in which the Minister of Heavy Industry and Steel and Steel and Coal and Mines, G.,. Kishan Reddy was also involved. He said that now India will not be limited only to mining, but now work from research to processing will also be done here.
