The country’s well-known government lawyer Ujjwal Nikam has been nominated by the President of India Draupadi Murmu for the Rajya Sabha. He has received this honor for his long and excellent legal career, especially given his role in cases of terrorism and major crimes. Earlier, Ujjwal Nikam contested the Lok Sabha election on a BJP ticket in 2024, but he had to face defeat.

Now after being nominated to the Rajya Sabha, Ujjwal Nikam’s first response has come. He said, “I got a call from PM Modi. He talked to me in Marathi. He said that the President is going to give you a big responsibility. I believe you will do it well.” Now after nomination in the Rajya Sabha, Ujjwal Nikam will again participate in the big decisions related to the law and policies of the country.

Early life and studies

Ujjwal Nikam was born on 30 March 1953 in a Marathi family in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. His father Devraoji was a Nikam judge and barrister, while the mother was a housewife. Nikam graduated in Science from Pune University (B.Sc.) and Law Degree (LLB) from SS Maniyar Law College, Jalgaon.

Strong identity in the field of law

He started his career as District Prosecutor in Jalgaon. Gradually, he made an identity across the country with his hard work, preparation and strong arguments. Nikam served in TADA court for more than 14 years and led the prosecution in cases related to terrorism.

He got the maximum identity from the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case. He played an important role in punishing Ajmal Kasab in the court. In this case, his work strengthened the people’s law.

Apart from this, he has also led the prosecution in 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, Pramod Mahajan murder, Khairlanji scandal and many Naxalites and terrorism related cases.

Lose in Lok Sabha elections, but opportunity in Rajya Sabha

In 2024, Ujjwal Nikam contested the Lok Sabha elections from the BJP from the Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha seat, but he could not win. However, in view of his experience and contribution, the President has nominated him for the Rajya Sabha. This enrollment has been done under Article 80 of the Constitution, under which those who contribute specially in art, literature, science or social service can be selected for the Rajya Sabha.
