A big data leak case has come to light in IIT Roorkee, counted among the top engineering institutions in the country. This incident has not only raised questions on the safety of students and alumni, but is also expressing serious concern over the cyber security system of the institute.
According to the Times of India report, personal information of more than 30,000 students and alumni was opened on a public website for the last several years. This information included mobile number, email ID, parents’ contact number, caste category, financial status, admission and graduation year, even photos.
How was it revealed?
It is believed that this data was evacuated electronically from the records of the academic affairs department of IIT Roorkee and then put on a website without any security. On this website, any person could see the complete information of the student by putting the enrollment number of the student.
When the information came to the institute about this matter, he immediately ordered to start an internal investigation. Deputy Director UP Singh said that we have sent the matter to Dean Academic Affairs and Dean Student Welfare so that necessary action can be taken.

Website was running for 10 years
According to the report, this website was active for about 10 years. Although there was no data of the current year on this, the old records were constantly being updated. Many students believe that the website operator was using these necessary information from an unknown place and its purpose is not yet clear.
A student said that it is a very serious matter that an unknown person has our personal information and he is sharing it. The institute did not even know about this, which is even more worrying.
Next action of the institute
At present, IIT Roorkee has started an internal investigation. Hopefully, quick steps will be taken to close the website and secure data. However, the institute has not yet issued an official statement about any possible threat related to the use of leaked data.
