The issue of Maratha reservation in Maharashtra is once again gaining momentum. The state government has extended the tenure of the Geniology Committee constituted under the chairmanship of the Tehsildar at the tehsil level to issue caste certificate and caste validity certificate for Maratha society to 30 June 2026.
This committee tests the eligibility of eligible persons associated with Kunbi and Maratha-Kunbi caste. An order has been issued in this regard by the Department of Social Justice and Special Assistance. State Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat gave information about this on 30 August.
Role of Geniology Committee
The Maharashtra government formed the ‘Justice Sandeep Shinde Samiti’ in the year 2023, which is also commonly known as the Geniology Committee. The main function of this committee is to investigate historical and lineage -based relations between the Maratha community and the Kunbi caste.
The committee determines which people can be given the benefit of reservation of Kunbi (OBC) category based on documents and historical records. In this way, the committee plays an important role in connecting the Maratha society with reservation.
Reservation demand for Maratha society
Please tell that the Maratha community has been demanding reservation for a long time. The society argues that their ancestors are basically associated with the farming class, ie Kunbi. The committee is working to confirm this relationship in historical and government records.
The importance of the functioning of this committee increases further because the Maratha society is a large population of the state and the issue related to their reservation has been very sensitive on both politics and social levels.
Government’s decision and further way forward
The government believes that it is necessary to increase the term of this committee so that the benefits of reservation can be ensured to the eligible people. This will not only pave the way of social justice for the Maratha community, but will also maintain a balance on reservation with OBC sections. In the coming time, the report of the committee and the decision of the government based on it, the Maratha society can give a decisive turn to the long -standing reservation demands.
