Supercomputer Cost and Power Consumption: In today’s time, supercomputers are definitely used in big works related to AI, weather forecasting, discovery of new medicines and space. It looks like a normal computer, but its capacity is millions and millions of times more.

This is the reason why the world’s biggest scientific research, difficult calculations and analysis of big data are done with the help of supercomputers. In such a situation, a question arises in the minds of many people that how much does a supercomputer cost? How much electricity does it cost to run and how is it so different from a normal computer? So let us know how much a supercomputer costs and how much electricity it consumes in an hour.

What is a supercomputer?

Supercomputer is a very powerful computer, which is made to do big and difficult tasks at very high speed. It can work on a lot of data in less time. It is used in weather forecasting, scientific research, climate related research, Artificial Intelligence (AI), discovering new medicines and other big research projects.

How different is it from a normal computer?

Compared to normal computers, thousands or millions of CPU cores work simultaneously in supercomputers. This is the reason why it can complete such tasks in a very short time, which would take a lot of time for a normal computer. In a supercomputer, all the processors work in parallel processing, due to which its speed increases manifold.

How much does a supercomputer cost?

The price of supercomputer varies depending on its capacity, technology and usage. The price of a small AI supercomputer can be around Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5.5 lakh. At the same time, small systems like NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano Super, which work on AI and machine learning, are available for around Rs 44 thousand to Rs 50 thousand.

Supercomputers built for big institutions and government research are very expensive. The cost of supercomputers for weather forecasting, nuclear research and running large AI models can range from Rs 25 crore to Rs 130 crore or even more. About Rs 130 crore was spent on building three indigenous supercomputers like Param Rudra of India.

How much electricity does it consume in an hour? super computer

A lot of electricity is required to run a supercomputer. A typical supercomputer can consume about 20 to 30 megawatts (MW) of electricity in an hour. Frontier, one of the world’s fastest supercomputers, consumes about 29 megawatts of electricity in an hour. The power consumption of the Colossus supercomputer built for AI is even higher. It can use up to 280 MW of power at maximum capacity. Apart from this, Aurora supercomputer consumes about 38.6 MW and Japan’s K Supercomputer consumes about 9.8 MW of electricity.
