The host of the Badminton World Championship 2026 will be India. After 17 years, this tournament is going to be held in India. Earlier in 2009, this tournament took place in Hyderabad, now it is the second time in history when India is hosting it. On Monday, the Badminton World Federation announced the name of New Delhi as the host city.

The announcement was made at the closing ceremony of the 29th edition in the city of Paris, France. On this occasion, Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, President of Badminton World Federation, and General Secretary of Badminton Association of India Sanjay Mishra were present. Mishra promised that India will maintain the grandeur displayed in Paris.

In a BAI release, Mishra said, “We assure that India will make 100 percent effort to maintain and carry out the same standards of excellence and grandeur displayed by Paris. We are eager to welcome the badminton family to Delhi.”

India won only one medal in Paris

The Badminton World Championship 2025 ended on 31 August, in which India won only one medal. The top country was China, which won a total of 6 medals including 2 gold. Japan won a total of 3 medals including 1 gold. Malaysia, South Korea and Denmark won 2-2 medals. Thailand, Canada, France, India and Indonesia won 1–1 medals.

For India, the pair of Satvik Raj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the bronze medal for India, which is India’s only medal in the tournament. The pair defeated Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang of China (21-19 21-15, 21-17) in Round-16. In the quarter-finals, Satwik and Shetty defeated Olympic medalist Malaysia’s Aaron Chia/Soh Wui Yik 21-12 21-19.

India last hosted in 2009

The Badminton World Championship was hosted by India in the first and last time in 2009. China was also at the top in that edition, China won a total of 10 medals including 4 gold. India could not win a single medal then.
