Education in India is always considered the key to development. But do you know which state of the country is the most educated? According to the latest reports, Himachal Pradesh has won this big title. The state has not only set a great record in literacy, but has become the first state in the country whose literacy rate has now been 99.3 percent.
Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu will declare Himachal as a complete literate state during the “Ullas Mela” organized at Peterhoff, Shimla on the occasion of International Literacy Day on 8 September. This moment will be proud of every citizen of the state. Himachal has created a new history by crossing the 95 percent literacy standard set by the central government.
What do figures say?
According to the report of the Education Department, currently the estimated population of Himachal is around 75.05 lakhs. Of these, only 56,960 people are illiterate. The government is running a special campaign to make these people literate.

They have also achieved achievement
Before Himachal, some other states of the country and one union territory have also achieved this major achievement. Mizoram got the distinction of becoming India’s first fully literate state on 20 May 2025. According to the 2023-24 report, the literacy rate here is 98.2%, while in the 2011 census it was only 91.33%. After this, Goa increased its literacy rate from 94% to 100% with the help of education and training programs through Ullas (Understanding of Lifelong Learning for All in Society) initiative.
Tripura also showed miracles in the field of education, where in 1961 the literacy rate was only 20.24% and now it has reached 95.6%. Himachal Pradesh achieved the title of becoming a fourth completely literate state with 99.3% literacy rate. Here programs like “Reading and writing campaign” and “Saakshar Bharat Mission” contributed significantly. At the same time, Ladakh is the first union territory in the country to achieve this position with 97% literacy rate.
