Sushila was born on 7 June 1952 in Birtnagar. He studied in political science and law, then made a career in advocacy and legal reforms. He obtained a BA from Mahendra Morang Campus in Birtnagar in 1972, Masters degree in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi in 1975 and a law from Tribhuvan University in Nepal in 1978.
Karki started her legal practice in Birtnagar in 1979 and worked as an assistant teacher in Mahendra Multiple Campus of Dharan in 1985. She became a senior advocate in 2007.
