America has announced to impose heavy tariffs on imported generic medicines from August 2028. According to US President Donald Trump, the purpose of this step is to increase the production of pharmaceutical medicines in America. This announcement by Trump is likely to have a serious impact on India, because it is the largest exporter of generic medicines of America.
Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social that this tariff plan will be implemented in several phases and it will start from August 1. America will not impose any tariff on all generic medicines coming into the country for the first two years. He said that the tariff will be increased to 100% in the third year and after that it will become 200%.
Trump wrote, “Starting August 1, 2026, the tariff on all generic drugs coming to America will be zero for two years. After this, the tariff will be increased to 100 percent for one year and then to 200 percent after that.” He further said, “This is being done to bring the production of generic medicines back to America. Companies that do not build plants and equipment within the stipulated time frame will be fined.”

The US President said that the purpose of this policy is to protect the people of America. He said, “The policy related to patented, branded or innovative medicines, which has been very successful, will remain the same.” Let us tell you that India is called the pharmacy of the world because it supplies generic medicines to countries all over the world.
Medicines worth billions of dollars are sent to America
The share of Indian generic medicines in America is about 40 percent. According to a report by the Global Trade Research Initiative, India exported medicines worth US $ 9.7 billion to the US in the financial year 2024-2025, which was 38 percent of its total global drug exports of US $ 25.8 billion. However, it is not yet clear what impact Trump’s new tariff threats will have on Indian pharmaceutical companies. India and the US had signed a trade agreement in February, in which it was decided that India would get negotiated results regarding generic medicines.
