Activists of a US-based rights group demonstrated in New York and San Jose to express solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk who is fasting unto death. Wangchuk is on a fast unto death in Delhi demanding irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) examination and reforms in the education system.
Activists of ‘Hindus for Human Rights’ gathered near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Union Square and San Jose in New York City on Monday evening. They were holding placards in their hands on which slogans were written in support of Wangchuk. The activists also raised slogans against the Indian government and demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
‘Hindus for Human Rights’ said in a statement issued on Tuesday that similar demonstrations were also held outside the Indian High Commission in London and the Indian Embassy in Dublin. “Our protests have sent a clear message that whether in New York, London, San Jose or Dublin, Indian students must be treated fairly and with respect,” the statement said.
Demonstration in Europe also
On behalf of international organizations like Hindus for Human Rights and Azadi Project, demonstrations were held in support of Vaganchuk outside the Indian High Commission and embassies in many countries of Europe besides America. The statement said that the youth of India want honest answers and a future on which they can trust. Indian citizens have the right to open dialogue and reform and it is time for the Indian government to accept accountability.
Appeal to the Government of India
Hindus for Human Rights had earlier this week appealed to the Indian government to talk to Wangchuk and other protesters who are on hunger strike over alleged irregularities in the conduct of the NEET exam. Wangchuk’s health deteriorated due to hunger strike for more than 3 weeks, after which Delhi Police removed him from Jantar Mantar and admitted him to Safdarjung Hospital. Following the order of Delhi High Court, he was shifted to a private hospital.
