Those killed in GEN-Z demonstration will be honored like martyrs, Nepal’s interim PM Sushila Karki announced

Nepal’s newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki announced on Sunday (September 14, 2025) that those killed in the agitation led by Gen Z will be officially honored as martyrs. In his first national address after taking charge, Karki made this announcement. He said that his interim government would support the victim families and recognize the sacrifice of the youth.

He said, “I have been deeply saddened by the loss of families, especially from families who have lost their school and college -going children. Those killed during the performance of Generation Z will be declared martyred. Their families will get financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh and the injured will also be assisted.” He also informed that it has been decided to arrange vehicles for people wishing to take the dead bodies to their local areas.

‘Me and my team did not come here to taste power’

The 73 -year -old former Chief Justice and Nepal’s first woman Prime Minister Karki stressed that her administration is designed not to hold power, but to stabilize the country during an unstable transition period. He said, “Me and my team have not come here to taste power. We will not stop for more than 6 months. We will hand over the responsibility to the new Parliament. We will not get success without your support.”

Protests started from Kathmandu on 8 September

Addressing the nation, Karki called for solidarity to deal with Nepal’s political and economic crises. Let us know that on September 8, after the controversial social media ban in Kathmandu, protests started across the country. Seeing the protest against corruption, unemployment and inequality in Nepal, it was not known when it turned into violent protests.

51 people died

KP Sharma Oli had to resign from the post of Prime Minister due to Gen Z’s aggressive stance. He is currently living in Shivpuri in Kathmandu under the patronage of the Nepali Army. At least 51 people were killed and more than 1,300 injured in the clashes between the protesters and the police.
