Nathuram Godse shot and killed the President Mahatma Gandhi on 30 January 1948 after the country got independence from the British. After the assassination of Gandhiji, there was a wave of mourning not only in the country but all over the world. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, who demanded Pakistan on the assassination of Gandhiji, the priest of Ahimsa, also expressed grief in Jinnah. Jinnah had said, ‘The world has lost a great person.’
The next day of Gandhiji’s assassination, Jinnah recalled his contribution to his condolence message and described him as a ‘great person’. Although there were sharp ideological differences on the issue of partition between Jinnah and Gandhi, Jinnah described Gandhi’s assassination as a serious and tragic incident. The Government of Pakistan officially mourned on this occasion and appealed to the people to maintain peace.
Mohammad Ali Jinnah gave condolence message
Jinnah had expressed condolences and said, ‘I am in shock that Mahatma Gandhi was attacked in which he has passed away. Regardless of our political differences, they were the great people and leaders born in the Hindu community, which the Hindu community had full faith.
Jinnah further said, ‘I want to express my deep sorrow, I express deep sympathy to the great Hindu community and their families at this important, historical and critical turn immediately after the independence of India and Pakistan. The loss of dominance of India is irreplaceable and it will be very difficult to fill the zero generated by the death of such a great person at this time.
Jinnah’s criticism over the word ‘Hindu’
However, Jinna was also criticized for addressing Mahatma Gandhi by adding the word ‘Hindu’ in the statement. Jinnah also paid tribute to him after the death of Mahatma Gandhi. Jinnah’s tribute was also important because Bapu was against Pakistan Partition and he was also ready to retreat the Congress and make Jinnah the first government.
Liaquat Ali Khan also expressed mourning
Let me tell you that not only Jinnah, in the session of 4 February 1948, House leader Liaquat Ali Khan also mourned about the death of Mahatma Gandhi. He said, ‘I have stood up to talk about Gandhiji’s death with deep grief. He was one of the great men of our time.
He finished his speech saying, ‘We hope and pray that whatever Gandhiji could not achieve in his lifetime, it should be completed after his death, that is, peace and harmony should be established between various nations living in this subcontinent.’
