There has been a change in international politics regarding Afghanistan. India has now appeared on the same platform against America with countries like Taliban, Russia, China and Pakistan. The protest is against US President Donald Trump’s statement in which he demanded to hand over the Bagram Airbase of Afghanistan to the US. This new status of India is considered a historical change in its Afghan policy, because till now India had avoided any direct political connection with the Taliban.
The seventh meeting of “Moscow Format Consultation on Afghanistan” held in Russia’s capital Moscow included representatives from India, Russia, China, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus. The joint statement issued after the meeting said that the military deployment of any outside country in Afghanistan or its neighboring countries is unacceptable, as it is against regional peace and stability. Although the name of America was not taken in the statement, this message was a direct indication on Trump’s policy.
Rhetoric between Trump and Taliban intensifies
US President Donald Trump recently reiterated that the Taliban should hand over the US back to Bagram Airbase. In a joint press conference with the British Prime Minister Kim Stmper, he said, “We gave that base to him for free, now we want him back.” However, later he wrote on his social media platform Truth social social, “If Afghanistan did not return Bagram airbase, it will have serious consequences.” On this statement, Taliban spokesperson Jabihulla Mujahid replied that Afghan will not leave his land at any cost, we are ready to fight the next 20 years.
India’s stance
India made it clear in the Moscow meeting that Afghanistan’s stability should not be affected by any foreign military pressure or intervention. The Indian representative said that the sovereignty and regional peace of Afghanistan should be respected. External intervention will only promote instability.
Afghan External Affairs Minister Mukki’s visit to India
Afghan Foreign Minister Aamir Khan Mutki will be on a visit to India from 9 to 16 October. This will be his first official visit to India. Mukki is included in the banned list of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), hence special approval has been given to come to India.
Bagram Airbase Asia’s political center
Bagram Airbase, located about 50 km from Kabul, is the largest and strategic airport in Afghanistan. Its two runways are 3.6 km and 3 km long respectively. From 2001 to 2021 it was the head of the US Army, where campaigns against terrorism were conducted. The geographical location of Bagram is at the confluence of Central, West and South Asia, which makes it strategically extremely important. America wants to take this base under control again so that it can maintain monitoring of Iran, Pakistan and China.
