The Swedish Academy announced the Nobel Prize for Literature on Thursday (9 October 2025). These awards were announced at 4:30 pm. This time Hungary’s Laszlo Krasznahorkai has been honored with the Nobel Prize for Literature. This award is given to those writers who have made a special contribution to literature by writing excellent books or poems.
‘Laszlo’s works are impressive and visionary’
Announcing the award, the Swedish Academy said that Laszlo Krasznahorkai’s works are very influential and visionary. She shows the power of art even in the midst of destruction and fear in the world. László is an epic writer in the Central European tradition, which extends from Kafka to Thomas Bernhard, and his specialty is balladry.
His first novel Satantango was published in 1985 and managed to establish him as a writer in Hungary. The novel focuses on a group of destitute residents living on a barren farm in rural Hungary, just before the fall of Communism.
Many films have been made on Laszlo’s books.
The committee said that there is darshan in his books. The problems of humanity, anarchy and modern society are discussed with great frankness. Overall, Laszlo is famous for writing sad stories with deep thinking. Films have also been made on his books ‘SatanTango’ and ‘The Melancholy of Resistance’.
‘The Melancholy of Resistance’ revolves around the difficult lives of a small village and its people, which beautifully presents the vices and virtues of human nature. A 7-hour long film was even made on Satantango, which was highly praised.
The winner will receive 11 million Swedish krona (Rs 10.3 crore), gold medal and certificate. If more than one person gets it, the prize money is divided among them. The awards will be given in Stockholm on December 10. The Nobel Academy has so far announced awards for Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Literature.
