In this case, Lucknow Police has arrested two accused, one of whom was shot in the leg, while one is still absconding. Mayawati’s reaction has raised questions on the Yogi government and law and order regarding women’s safety in the state. Other opposition parties have also targeted the Yogi government for atrocities on women and Dalits in the state.

In various states of the country including UP, incidents of harassment of women as well as rape and murder etc. are not stopping. There is a strong need for the government to take effective steps to prevent this. Forget about women’s respect, women’s safety is first and foremost important. After this statement of Mayawati, questions are being raised on the law and order of Yogi government and women’s safety in the state.
What is Banthra gangrape case?
At around 12 noon on Saturday afternoon, a minor student from Banthra area had left home to meet her sister. A friend was with him on the way. Then some youths beat up the friend, chased him away and took the student to a deserted place. In an intoxicated state, accused Vishal Gupta, Rajendra Kashyap alias Babu, Meraj, Lalit Kashyap and Shiv Kashyap gang-raped her. When the victim returned home at around 5 pm and informed the family.

The police, showing speed in this case, not only registered a case and got the victim’s medical done, but also arrested two accused in an encounter on Saturday night itself. One of the accused, Lalit, was shot in the leg, while Meraj was arrested from another police station area. Police is running a search operation for the third accused.
