Google: Today every information is just a search away. But there are some things which typing on Google can not only be dangerous but can also create legal problems. Many people search for sensitive things out of fun, out of curiosity or in the name of education, but it is important to remember that your online activities are recorded and can be made available to the authorities if they come under the ambit of the law.

Which searches are most likely to become suspicious?

If by mistake or due to some experiment you type words or questions on Google which are directly related to any crime or violence, such as methods of making weapons, how to prepare bombs or poison, methods of kidnapping someone or finding a hitman, manufacturing of drugs, information related to attacking any government or public place, stealing/displaying someone’s personal information, etc., then these searches can automatically become a reason for investigation. Similarly, keywords related to extremist or terrorist activities are also considered very sensitive.

Why can Google and police see the logs?

Digital traces such as your search history, IP address and geo-location are recorded by service providers and platforms. If necessary, law enforcement agencies can demand these records through a court order, subpoena or official request. India has a number of laws governing cyber matters and broader security—such as the IT Act and criminal law—allowing authorities to take action based on digital evidence, especially when a search gives rise to a clear intent or threat of risk.

What to do if search is done by mistake

First of all, don’t panic. If you are innocent and the truth is that you saw something just out of curiosity, study or research, then it is better that you remain calm and adopt necessary procedures. Don’t share your browsing records publicly, don’t make further mistakes by clicking on suspicious links, and if you receive any kind of notice or inquiry, contact a lawyer immediately for legal advice. The lawyer will help you decide on the correct corrective steps, evidence, documents and communication outline.

Is searching itself a crime?

Not every search constitutes a crime. Legal action is usually taken when a search is accompanied by clear signs of criminal intent, preparation, or conscientiousness, such as records of unusual purchases, suspicious messages, or actual contracts. Therefore, it is not necessary to panic immediately because of one or two wrong clicks, but it is wise to increase caution and fully cooperate with the law.
