Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mongolian President Hurelsukh Ukhna talked on many issues on Tuesday (October 14). During the talks, possible supply of uranium from Mongolia to India and steps to promote bilateral defense relations were discussed. Meanwhile, the biggest thing is that India is now planning to import coking coal from Mongolia. It will not have to depend on China for this. India has found a new path.
India will not import coal from Mongolia through China but through Russia. However, the Ministry of External Affairs is currently in talks with Russia and Mongolia regarding a new trade corridor for the import of Mongolian coal. According to the report of ‘Indian Express’, Foreign Ministry Secretary P. Kumaran said that Mongolia has huge reserves of coking coal, but it does not have a sea port. At present it is dependent on China for the export of coal.
How will India import coal through Russia?
The Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs said, ,If India wants to get coal from Mongolia, it will have to use China’s Tianjin port, but Russia’s Vladivostok port is also a good option. Therefore, talks are going on regarding both the options., The important thing is that India can give priority to Russia over China for strategic reasons, but the path to Russia will be costly and long.
Why does India have to buy coal from Mongolia?
India is the second largest crude steel producing country in the world. Indian steel companies use about 70 million tonnes of coking coal every year and India imports 85 percent of this coal. Coking coal is high class and very pure coal. Till now, India has been taking about 50 percent of its share from Australia, but because of Mongolia, now it will not have to depend too much on Australia.
