Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have suffered a major setback. The group reported on Thursday (October 16, 2025) that its chief of staff and one of the most senior military officers, Muhammad Abd al-Karim al-Ghamari, has been killed in an attack while on his military duty. Although the Houthi rebels did not directly blame Israel for his death, the statement warned that Israel would be severely punished for its crimes.
“Al-Ghamri’s martyrdom will not break our morale, but will strengthen our resistance,” a Houthi group spokesman said in a statement. Our conflict with Israel is not over yet and we will protect our people at all costs.
Israel responded to the attack by Houthi rebels
Let us tell you that in the month of August, Israel carried out an airstrike in Sana’a, Yemen, in which the Chief of Staff, Defense Minister and other senior officials of the Houthi group were targeted. The Prime Minister and several other ministers of Yemen’s Houthi-run government were killed in this attack. Israel confirmed that al-Ghamri, the Defense Minister and other senior officials were involved in the airstrike.
The Israeli Defense Minister said in his statement on Thursday that Israel carried out an airstrike on Gamari. He said, ‘We will do the same against any future threat.’ Houthi rebels had fired missiles towards Israel in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza, most of which were shot down by Israel in the air. Israel has now responded by attacking Houthi controlled areas of Yemen.
A major strategic loss for the Houthi organization
Muhammad Abd al-Ghamari was a very influential face in the military structure of the Houthi militia. He was considered the chief planner of strategic operations and military actions against Saudi Arabia and other opposition forces. His death is being considered a major strategic loss for the Houthi organization.
Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi said last week that the group would monitor Israel’s compliance with the Gaza ceasefire agreement, and would resume support for Gaza if Israel fails to comply.
