When the Taliban attacked Pakistan Army across the border, Saudi Arabia neither provided any support nor made any strong statements – only appealing to both sides to exercise restraint.
Questions raised on defense pact
Regarding the Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement (SMDA) signed between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, many experts are now saying that it was exaggerated. In reality this agreement had no solid basis or legal effect. Pakistan had claimed that if there is an attack on Saudi, it will be considered an attack on Pakistan and the same rule will apply vice versa. But when Taliban attacked the Pakistani army, Saudi Arabia just issued a simple statement appealing to both the countries to maintain peace, which proved Pakistan’s claim hollow.
Qatar, not Saudi, brokered ceasefire with Taliban
The most interesting thing is that the ceasefire between Taliban and Pakistan was not achieved by Saudi Arabia, but by Qatar with the help of Türkiye. From this it became clear that Saudi no longer wants to interfere in this matter. Not only this, Taliban also won in the ceasefire agreement. He made Qatar ensure that words like ‘Durand Line’ or ‘border’ were not mentioned in the agreement, meaning the Taliban once again rejected Pakistan’s border claim.
Ruckus in Pakistan Parliament
This entire incident has created an upheaval in the politics of Pakistan. Opposition parties have demanded that the government should keep complete information about SMDA in Parliament and an open debate should be held on it. His question is- ‘If there was really a defense agreement with Saudi Arabia, then why did it not support Pakistan during the crisis?’
Saudi’s priority now is India
Many experts say that Saudi Arabia is now moving away from Pakistan and leaning towards the stable economies of India and Gulf countries. Economic stability and investment opportunities are more important for Saudi now, not military alliances.
