Thousands of people had arrived in Iran’s capital Tehran on Friday (3 July 2026) to attend the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. His coffin was draped in the Iranian national flag and his signature black turban was placed over it. The coffin was brought to the venue with full respect. Bodies of other family members were also kept with them. These included the small coffin of his 14-month-old granddaughter, which made people emotional.
Khamenei’s granddaughter Zahra Mohammadi Golpayeghani died on February 28. She was killed along with some other members of her family when America and Israel together started the war against Iran. On Friday, his small coffin was also kept wrapped in the national flag. Besides, a photograph of him was also kept near the coffin.

Khamenei’s body will be kept in many cities of Iraq
Khamenei’s body reached Tehran on Friday. After this, public funeral programs were organized for 6 days in many cities of Iran and Iraq. His body will be taken to many cities of Iran and neighboring country Iraq so that people can pay their last respects. Since Friday evening, hundreds of supporters of the Islamic Republic started gathering outside the Grand Mosala in Tehran. Everyone was waiting for the last darshan. As soon as the gate was opened for the general public, thousands of people reached inside. Within no time the entire main campus was filled with people.

According to news agency AFP, many people attending the funeral had red banners in their hands. The red banner is seen as a symbol of revenge. During this, the crowd raised slogans like death of America, revenge, revenge. According to the information, Khamenei’s coffin will be kept in Tehran till Monday (6 July 2026). After this a big procession will be taken out in the city. His body will be taken to the religious center of Qom on Tuesday (7 July 2026). After this, on Wednesday (8 July 2026) it will be taken to the holy cities of Iraq for the last darshan. Finally, on Thursday (9 July 2026), he will be cremated in the city of Mashhad in north-eastern Iran, which is his home.
