The US on Monday (June 8, 2026) said it has started the process of revoking the citizenship of 17 people, including an Indian immigrant accused of serious crimes. The Justice Department said that Neeraj Sharma (50), owner of New Jersey-based placement firm ‘MagnaVision LLC’, is accused of signing 11 fake H-1B visa applications claiming that the individuals concerned would work in a global financial institution.
According to the department, the letters submitted by Neeraj and Sharma as supporting documents for H1B visa applications allegedly contained forged signatures of officials of the global financial institution. The department said that Neeraj Sharma had applied for citizenship in 2017. She alleged that Neeraj Sharma had lied about his past criminal conduct during a citizenship interview.
According to the department, Neeraj Sharma got American citizenship in December 2017. He was later convicted of fraud and visa misuse between April 2015 and April 2017. Markwayne Mullin, head of the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement, ‘US citizenship is a privilege and must be earned with integrity. If you come here, break our laws and lie during immigration proceedings, you lose this privilege.
Under the Immigration and Citizenship Act in the US, if a person has acquired US citizenship illegally, by hiding important information or by knowingly giving false information, then his citizenship can be taken away.

Apart from Neeraj Sharma, the 16 people for whom the process of revoking US citizenship has been initiated include a Haitian man accused of sexually assaulting his daughter, a Yugoslavian man convicted of sexually abusing a child under the age of 15, a Mexican immigrant convicted of possessing obscene images of minors, a former priest from Colombia accused of sexually abusing children and a man from the Philippines who has pleaded guilty to sexual offenses against children.
