Lakhs of students preparing for medical and engineering entrance exams are using Telegram today. Due to features like free notes, test series, PDF and doubt solving, this platform has become very popular among students. However, experts believe that Telegram can prove to be as harmful as it is helpful. Recently, a temporary ban has been imposed on Telegram by the Central Government regarding NEET-UG re-exam.
The Central Government has decided to impose a temporary ban on Telegram till June 22 to make the re-examination of NEET-UG 2026 to be held on June 21 safe and fair. Besides, it has been decided to keep the facility of editing messages closed till June 30. The government believes that this will prevent the spread of fake paper leaks and misinformation.
How is Telegram helpful for students?
According to reports, in the last few years Telegram has emerged as a major medium for education related content. Students preparing for NEET and JEE get access to expensive coaching notes, DPP, e-books and PDF files of various subjects for free. Many coaching institutes also share study material through their official channels.
Apart from this, quizzes, mock tests and MCQ practice sessions are organized daily on Telegram. This gives students practice in solving questions in a time bound manner, which is considered very important in competitive examinations.
In many study groups on Telegram, students connect with each other to discuss difficult topics and find solutions to their questions. This facility is proving to be especially useful for students living in rural areas or small towns, where there is a lack of coaching resources.

However, as great as the benefits of Telegram are, the risks associated with it are equally serious. Experts say that this platform can also become a big distraction for students. Students who open apps for studies sometimes get entangled in unnecessary channels, entertainment groups and continuous notifications, which affects their studies.
The biggest concern is about fake paper leaks and cyber fraud. Before examinations like NEET, claims of paper leak are often made on Telegram. Many fake channels claim to provide question papers by charging huge amount from the students, whereas later this information proves to be completely wrong. Thousands of students have become victims of fraud in such cases.
What precautions should be taken?
According to reports, use of Telegram should be limited only to trusted and official educational channels. One should not believe the claims of any paper leak, shortcut success or giving question papers for money.
