Bone Marrow Health tips: There is a special tissue inside our bones which is called bone marrow. It is mainly found inside the long bones (such as the thigh bone and pelvic bone) and the bones of the spine. We do not think of it as just spongy tissue filled inside the bones, but it is the most important part of the body.

The biggest function of bone marrow is blood formation. This work is done with hematopoietic stem cells. These cells divide and produce red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. This is why keeping the bone marrow healthy is very important for our body. But due to our daily habits it can also get spoiled, in such a situation let us tell you today which activities can spoil your bone marrow.

What are the important functions of bone marrow?

1. Making Red Blood Cells (RBCs) – Their job is to deliver oxygen to the entire body. Due to their deficiency, problems like fatigue, weakness and anemia occur.

2. White Blood Cells (WBCs) – It protects our immunity. Fights infections, bacteria and viruses.

3. Making Platelets – Helps blood clot in case of injury. If their number decreases then even small wounds start bleeding profusely.

Which activities can damage your bone marrow?
1. Smoking and tobacco – Smoking and tobacco contain many dangerous chemicals. These chemicals reduce the formation of blood cells in the bone marrow, due to which not enough red blood cells and white blood cells are produced.

2. Excessive alcohol consumption – Drinking too much alcohol suppresses the production of red blood cells. This causes problems like lack of oxygen in the body, anemia, and fatigue. Long-term alcohol consumption can directly affect the bone marrow cells.

3. Contact with chemicals – Pesticides, benzene and other industrial chemicals can directly damage the bone marrow. Due to this the production of blood cells reduces. Especially if chemicals enter the body for a long time, the risk of serious problems increases.

4. Lack of nutrition – Due to deficiency of Vitamin D, Calcium and Iron, bones become weak and the bone marrow does not function properly. Due to which the number of red blood cells reduces. Fatigue, weakness and anemia may occur. Due to lack of nutrition for a long time, the functionality of the bone marrow can become so weak that serious problems like blood cancer can also occur.

5. Infection – Some infections such as hepatitis and HIV can directly attack bone marrow cells. Due to this the number of blood cells decreases and immunity becomes weak.

6. Taking excessive medicines and steroids – Taking steroids or other medicines without doctor’s advice affects the functionality of the bone marrow and can cause serious health problems in the long run.
