After the test retirement of Rohit Sharma in May 2025, Shubman Gill was given the captaincy. After the Test, he also got the captaincy of the ODI team. But his name is not even found in the T20 team. Despite the excellent IPL 2026 season, Shubman Gill was not included in the squads for Ireland, England and Asian Games.
Gill had scored a total of 732 runs in IPL 2026. Despite this, the selectors of Team India have chosen a different path, because they have kept Gill out of their plan. Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ishan Kishan have been selected as opening and top order options for the England and Ireland tour. Meanwhile, an update has come out that Gill has been asked to keep full focus on ODI and Test.
Gill got the message
According to news agency PTI, a BCCI source said that the selectors are worried that there should not be any kind of pressure on Shubman Gill by playing all three formats. Because the Indian team has to play a lot of cricket in the next 18 months, it is almost impossible for any player to play with full enthusiasm in all three formats.
A BCI source said that a clear message has been sent to Gill that he has to focus on the next two ICC events. The first is the final of the World Test Championship 2027 and the second is the 2027 ODI Cricket World Cup.

Will he come back to the T20 team?
It is difficult to say anything about Gill’s future in T20 cricket at the moment. Due to poor form, he had to lose his place in the T20 World Cup 2026. On this subject, a BCCI source said that there is still a lot of time for both the big events to be held in 2028 (T20 World Cup and Olympics 2028). Therefore, nothing can be said about the time after 2 years as to who will be in what form and how fit will be?
